Service history question...

Ok... I just received the service history on the boat I might buy... Turns out the PO was a liar... I guess I am not wholly suprised.

I'm going to write verbatim what it says on the work order. This all happened in December of 2004:

-----------------------
REBUILD STERN DRIVE THAT WAS DAMAGED ----- NEEDED TO REMOVE LOWER UNIT, DIAL INDICATE PROP SHAFT, DISASSEMBLE DRIVE, REBUILD LOWER DRIVE WITH NEW PARTS, CLEAN UPPER AND RESEAL, INSTALL LOWER UNIT, RUN ENGINE AND ADJUST, AND PERFORM SKEG WELD ----- CUSTOMER OPTED NOT TO DO ANYTHING WITH THE PROPS.
------------------------

Here is what he paid for:

------------------------
Carrier Assy
Skeg Plate
Bushing
Prop Shaft
Repair Kit, Lower Unit
Phantom Black Paint
Zinc Primer
Drive Gasket Set W\R
Gear Lube
------------------------

Now I have doubts... Dammitall. Should I consider this a deal-breaker and NOT get it?

Pro: Its recently been rebuilt
Con: Its recently been rebuilt

ARGH.

Sean

Edit: The total bill for that service was $3,639... I'm paying $4095 for the boat...

Re: Service history question...

If it were me I would not necessarily be scared off.. I would make a water test a contigency on the deal and also to check LU lube after water test. As I said on your other post, you need to examine the condition of the bellows and I did not see a Water pump on the list he paid for. The water test can give you confidence that it runs, shifts and cools properly. It would even be better if they would pull the drive off to let you examine the gimbal, u-joints, and bellows. Its really not that invasive..

I don't think I would be that comfortable with a deal that didn't allow a water test as contingency. They are giving a warranty but if you have a problem, it is still your boat and you will have to argue for coverage..

Well... repairs are costly and a single trip over a big rock can cause that damage. Based on that repair I will make a WAG (wild a$$ guess)... he had a stainless steel prop on the boat when it hit something. Due to it's strength that is how propshafts get damaged. A standard aluminum prop would have proably shed the blades but they have been know to bend shafts too but not as often.

Here is the demand list:
Water test
compression test
warranty
free winterization following the test

Hang in there

Bob

I haven't seen your other posts,so maybe I can add only a little.
If PO is the seller, and has actually lied, why pursue it?
That workorder could be 'doctored' and you may not even know.
You have doubts.
Has this boat not been run since Dec 2004 ?

There are a lot of boats in the water, running well that you can throw your money at.

DHP

Re: Service history question...

According to the service records... the boat was winterized on November 3, 2005... I think this is the same time that he traded it in on his new boat.

That would lend me to believe that he used it all season last summer and he had no issues.

Sean

EE, what Bobvt said.....You like the boat, so you are prolly gonna do it anyway...I would stand on top or the out drive & make sure that there is no flex in the transom....I know that you do not spend alot of time in the I/O forum, but....I for one will try to help you with any questions :) & there are some people here who know dang near everything.....You want it! Just do it! Offer $20.00 for gas & burn it all! Idle, full throttle, half throttle & out of the hole are what to look at.....With a 5.0, I would think that boat should do close to 50.....Ask as many questions as you can think of .....Work that salesman till he drops!......JK

LOL RP -- I've seen that page many 'o times.

Yeah I think I freaked out a 'lil too much initially... new-boatitis me-thinks.

The problem was I was looking at it the wrong way, the fact that he just sunk $3600 into it... thats $3600 I don't have to sink into it. :D Regardless, I'm negotiating on a warranty, etc with the sales guy to C-M-A.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Sean

Sean, don't let this break your deal, it could be a good thing. I would check the drive oil and definately get a test drive. The other thing to do is have the prop checked at a prop shop, not the dealer. If he hit a rock or something the prop could have a slightly bent blade, that will cause you problems later.

JK, he hasn't had to spend much time in the merc fix forum............YET! :D :D
