Hey guys, I was wanting to swap the current motor on my boat for its original Force '89 125hp. I was wondering if I could use a mercury service manual as reference for a force motor. Do they have similar setup, wiring, etc..Not sure if im posting this in the right forum or not. Never swapped motors before..please help. All advice/ pointers appreciated. Thanks!!

Re: service manual

What you swapping out?
No usually the manual is brand specific.
The swap from a Merc to a Force is possible if the Merc and the Force is later than 94
The earlier models use different shifters, cables, controls, wiring harness, etc.

Re: service manual

Hey Jerry, thanks for the response. The boat is an '89 Bayliner Capri. The motor on it now is a '73 Johnson 70hp. The guy I bought it from wanted to go on the lake with his family for the 4th, and the force needed a water pump. So the guy put this motor on and now I have the water pump ready to install and need to swap motors. I have the U.S. Marine controls that goes with the Force and all of the wiring harnesses are there. Just wanted to know if I could use that manual as reference, if force and mercury were similar, as reference.

Re: service manual

So, the previous owner swapped out the motor when the only problem was a water pump? Talk about more trouble than it's worth. Frank A. has a great write up on the sticky's for swapping the water pump. I did one on a 1990 Force 90hp and it only took about an hour. Hardest part was getting the shift shaft back through the casing hole during reattachment.

Re: service manual

He's already fixed the impeller.
The manuals usually don't cover an install or change.
If you have the parts it'll be a fairly easy job.
Just make sure you fill the old holes with dowels and fiberglass.

Re: service manual

Thanks guys...Hey Jerry, what do you mean dowels? The guy said that the force left the transom with extra holes that he filled in with silicone. The johnson didn't use all of them. Im going to attempt the swap in the morning. Is there a specific silicone I should use? Any any marine grease was ok for the water pump, right??

Re: service manual

Dowls: wood dowels at any hardware or Home depot.
If he filled the original with sillycone your job just got a lot easier.
The size of the motor? If it's a 125 even an 85 the left over holes should be filled with wood and fiberglass resin.
The extra weight and the holes weaken the transom. The holes also let water in too.
ANY grease is good. Some use soap? I like grease.
make sure you grease the splines on top of the drive shaft and the prop shaft too.
