Servicing T&T

I have a T&T unit from a early 80s OMC that I'm getting ready to install. I'm going through the motor replacing brushes etc. I would like to change the hydraulic fluid. Is there any special way to drain it? Are there any filters or screens that I should check or clean? How do you check the fluid level to make sure it's correct? Do I have to use T&T fluid or can I use Mil Spec hydraulic fluid (5606)? For those of you following my other posts, this is the T&T going on my 72 100HP Johnny so I don't have a manual that covers this T&T. Thats why I'm asking all of the questions.
Thanks In advance

Russ in Texas

Re: Servicing T&T

Russ, I never thought about mil H5606 but it is petrol based....if the weight of the 2 are the same I think it may be ok, but again, I don't know the weight or make-up of "trim and tilt" fluid itself so I wouldn't take a chance without knowing.I did find that "Dexron" tranny fluid is approved, but I have also been told the orings don't last as long.
There is a specific drain valve located just below the res. on the starboard side of the system. There is a pump filter that sets right under the trim motor, but usually doesn't require much for cleaning.
After replacement of the components, it's best to fill the res while you still have the T-N-T unit out and in the verticle position. Fill through the res. plug and cycle the unit up and down several times and recheck...shouls hold 20+ ozs. Also, check level with rams fully extended.

Thanks Kenny. I notice I've got a little dampness around one of the trim rams. I may take a look at replacing the O rings while I'm at it. Better safe than sorry.

Best regards

Russ In Texas

Re: Servicing T&T

I've had it all together for a test fit and it fits perfect. Now I'm doing the clean paint make it look pretty thing. It wasn't a difficult job at all. Go find you a T&T, swivel bracket and transom mount from about a 78 or later. I bought the whole thing as a unit for $150. Take out the later model steering stem and toss it. The newer model steering stem is larger in diameter so you will have to make two bushings that will allow you to install your steering stem in the new swivel bracket and thats pretty much all there is to it. The only hard part was getting the steering stem out of the swivel bracket. You need an impact wrench and a press. I've got mine all stripped down to bare metal and have alodined it. I will prime it with epoxy polimide primer. I'm having to get the green paint matched because I can't find 72 Johnson Green Paint anywhere. If I can figure out how to post pics I will put some up.

Russ In Texas

Re: Servicing T&T

I checked them out. It's actually quicker and cheaper for me to get the paint shop to match the paint than it is to order it from Canada.

Russ In Texas

Re: Servicing T&T

Russ I measured length on a 79 and a 73 stem, it seemed like the 73 was about an inch shorter. did I measure wrong or what did you do about that..?
