Setting base timing on my 1994 four winns freedom, but have read different procedures:

My model number is 302 CCPMDA, which is a HEI 3.0 liter Omc motor. It has no plug on the right side terminal of the distributor (the four pin connector), just a rubber cover.
So I went to my local marina, and borrowed the timing tool, with the two white wires bridged and one black wire.
I understand about the basic procedure, but have a question on where if at all, do I plug in the black wire of the timing plug?

One Volvo Penta procedure posted by Don here shows a B+, and a video of Michigan motors timing an 2009 mercruiser shows the same.

I blew my HEI module doing this using a homemade harness, and just had a New module overnighted. Please advise, thanks!

Re: Setting base timing on an OMC 3.0

Ok, so I warmed up the motor, connected the plug on the distributor and nothing happened. I expected this, as this is what happened in the video I saw on YouTube. Had a alligator clip ready to hook the black wire to a positive power source, and noticed immediately the drop if the idle. With timing light in hand, I dialed in the distributor to 1 degree before TDC. Removed positive wire, idle went to normal, and with a quick check with the timing light, she was running at about 12 degrees at 800 rpm. I am ok with that, as I am only running 93 octane, and read you could do 4 degrees BTDC on high test.

Took it out on the lake, and it performed awesome. Pic of the timing shunt attached, nothing Don S. hasn't already posted under the sticky, just a bit confusing for the omc owner of a boat which was built during Volvos take over, and so much info (good here, so much bad out there)!
