Merc, carbed. 5.7L electronic ignition.
Trying to set base timing and i have a question. Here are the directions that i follow step by step. I have a question with number six and with the final checking of the timing.
1 I installed timing shunt into the distributor
2 I have a timing light on number one.
3 Started up engine
4 Put the loose wire from timing shunt to 12 volts (+) like the directions say.
5 Adjust idle to 750-850 rpms by turning stop screw on carb.
6 Set timing to 8 degrees BTDC by moving distributor. Here is my question, when i start to set the timing the Rpms change. Do i have to keep re-adjusting the carb stop screw to keep the idle at 750-850 rpms like in step 5 or do i just let the idle go to wherever and set the timing only?
7 Disconect timing shunt.
8 Reset idle to 650 + or - 50 Rpms.
Here is my second question. With this all being done, should i now be able to look at the timing mark and see it at the line (8 degrees) or does the engine do its own thing now and the timing mark at this point not matter?
