Anyone have a tip on settings the points on my 18hp. I've tried setting at .018, but when I tighten the screw the points always open more then .020. I've tried a 1000 different ways to set at .020 but still never seem to get a slight drag on my .020 feeler gauge. I usually find It's opened or closed a few thousands. Wish they were like the old Chevy points.

Tip: Tighten the screw first, then set the points. Yes, you heard right. Make sure the thin wave washer is under the screw head, then go ahead and tighten it. Yes, the eccentric screw can still move it.

OK, now for the rest of the story. Setting them at .020" only gets them "good enough". The CORRECT way to set them is with a special tool timing fixture and continuity tester. WHEN they open is what is important, not HOW FAR they open. If you want to know where to get a timing fixture, send me a PM.
