Looking for a little guidance in setting the timing and or spark advance on a 1976 35 HP Evinrude.
I have replaced the points and gap them .020. when i tried to start it I got a back fire. So my guess is my timing it retarded a little.

Sure sounds like wires are crossed.----How did the motor run for you last season ?

Just had the motor given to me. It had a bad coil on cylinder #2. I change the plugs. Rebuilt the carburetor and fuel pump. Replace bad vacuum and gas lines. Could I may be putting the throttle in the wrong place when starting? I don't have the remote cables hooked up to the motor.
I will go back tonight double check the plug wires with an ohm meter.

So you were given a motor that somebody gave up on ?---Does spark jump a gap of 5/16" or more , yes or no?------Perhaps wires from magneto plate to the coils are swapped.-----This should be an easy fix.

I would not be doing anything to timing without a proper manual.

I would rather not mess with the time, but if the plug wires are not crossed and i don't think they are. That would only leave a timing issue. causing it to back fire and not start.
I have a SELOC book on the motor.

It would be very unusual for timing to be out of adjustment.-----But you can check the timing using the timing marks on the flywheel and magneto plate.----Motor does not need to run to use those marks !!-----Yes there are timing marks.

And what am I look for or how do i verify the marks line up? I know then is a mark or 2 lines on the armature plate and time marks on the fly wheel.

I think coils are hooked up wrong....switch plug wires and I bet it fires up.

Ok double checked with an ohm meter and the wires were crossed. The other think I discovered is the remote cables need to be attached so the throttle is in the right position when starting. When doing that is fire over. Thanks again

How much did we bet? I'll take my winnings and share it with Crosby!
