setting up 2 sets of conrols in two locations

I'm redoing a 26' houseboat and I want to have a set of controls inside the cabin and one set up on the deck above. Do you typically run your cables in a series? Is it hard to make all the extra cables work smoothly? Would the steering be easier or work better if I went to a hydraulic system? Any experience or recommendation on parts would be appreciated. The motor is a 4 cylinder volvo I/O. Bob
