I have a Johnson 1978 6 hp motor that came with a boat I recently got, and have several question about it. First, I would like to replace the prop and am wondering what is recomended for it. Second, it looks like the shaft has a 5" extension on it. I would like to remove this and am wondering what is involved, and how involved it is. This is my first boat and motor so it's all new to me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

By the way, the motor seems to be running well.

Re: shaft extension

The motor that I got used to be on a v haul boat. My jon boat is much shallower. I'm using it on a very rocky river, so the less I have in the water the better.

Re: shaft extension

I had thought about building one and had an idea of how I would do it, but your way is a piece of cake and actually looks stronger. I think that this is what I'll do.

The transom of my boat is 15 1/2" how high can I raise it (what needs to be left in the water)?

Thanks for your help. Its been great to get answers to my questions so quickly.

Re: shaft extension

Raise it 5". No more, no less. That outboard needs to be submerged to a level where the waterline is over th impeller. It's designed for a 20" transom. You have a 15" transom. So, 5" higher is just right.

You may read all sorts of things here about outboard height. Those have to do with larger outboards. The smaller engines are different.
