Shaft length question

What dimension do manufacturers mean when they quote the shaft length for an outboard? Is it from the transom to the prop centre line or what? How do i know what shaft length i need for my boat? Thanks for any info

Mounting bracket surface which rests on top of transom to the top of cavitation plate.<br /><br />Std shaft lenghts are 15, 20 and 25"<br /><br />For a conventional monohull boat, measure from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull at the boat centerline.
