See attached sheet.

I have an 81 Evinrude 25HP E25RCIM. Where is the seal that is provided with the water pump repair kit supposed to go; see item #14. The pump housing has fins, for a lack of better words, on the underside keeping the seal from being placed between the housing and cup, and the extension tube goes on the top. So can someone please explain this to me. Is it a case of older housings not having the fins on the under side.

Looks like #14 is pressed into the upper housing.

I agree that's what it looks like per the parts page, but I don't see how it can based on how the pump housing is made. See below.

I am wondering if you got the right water pump for your motor. It could be that they changed designs also... I would try to contact the parts dealer and ask.

Yeah, I called them to ask. The sales agent I spoke to said that the part number for my motor had been supercieded 2 or 3 times now. The seal didn't actually come with the water pump repair kit. I ordered it because it's the same seal used for the crankshaft seal #39 in the part page. So the agent was supposed to look into it for me and give me a call back.

Re: Shaft Seal at Water Pump Housing

Well I heard back from the distributor and nothing diffinitive. They (MarineEngine.com) contacted Evinrude, and Evinrude told them to contact a local dealer. None of the kits, be it OMC, Sierra, Mallory, etc. provide an impeller housing shaft seal with their pump kits. Also, when just looking up the housing, none of the brands show the underside to compare. So I'm leaning towards the design has changed over the years such that the housing seal is no longer necessary. Again, if anyone could confirm or provide some input, I'd appreciate it.

I have the same motor and had the same concern when I changed my water pump. The design has changed eliminating that seal. No worries, it pumps plenty of water...

Re: Shaft Seal at Water Pump Housing

Thanks. I also contacted Joe the OMC Guy (joe@omcjoe.com) and he confirmed the same thing for me. Stating that when the motor is in water, there is water on either side of the cup, so therefore the seal is not necessary. Thanks, all I appreciate your help.
