1982 johnson 35hp.MOtor jerks violently to side every 5 seconds at slow speeds ,every 3 seconds at higher speed[25mph].doesnt rev up when it jerks,so doesnt fell like it pops out of gear,revs up in neutral so don't think its a fuel problem.

Sounds like its missing.Change the spark plugs.

Howdy, JR.<br />If changing the plugs doesn't solve your problem, try pumping your primer bulb. Your engine could be running lean or have a low float setting. Fuel pump is also a suspeect.<br /><br />Good luck.

Does it shake at idle when not in gear?

Take your cover off and listen for a popping sound. Could be you have a coil/power pack arcing. Look for cracks in it.
