shallow water anchor system

has anyone used one of these on a pontoon? What was it (power pole, talon, dig-in, wang, stick-it, homemade)?

I plan on building 2 mounts to shove 2 fiberglass poles through to anchor in shallow water.

I have ordered ten 54" long 11/16" thick solid fiberglass rods that i plan on using to make 4- 9' two piece anchors with and have 2 pieces for extentions in case i need 13' anchors. I will be fabricating the mounts using parts borrowed from wrecked 410 sprint cars that a guy I work with has laying behind his shop.

questions, comments, concerns are very welcome as i am still in the engineering phase at this time.

I think I saw this power pole idea in a rag awhile back. Seemed like a weird idea at the time. Shown with a small V Hull in shallow water. I don't know the conditions in In. but if there is a good wind I think you will have a hard time keeping that pontoon staked in. Whats wrong with a hook or two?

Power pole is out of the question for me because they are 1300 dollars. As for using anchors if the depth is 6' I would have like 20' of line out each end of the boat to hold it and the hassle of setting them where as if my system works i can anchor in less than a minute and be fishing

They do it all the time with work barges around here. Usually they use a steel or aluminum pipe with a loop welded to the top to help pull it up. If you have a muddy bottom and the pipe sleeve that is fixed to the boat doesn't have any excessive slop it will hold like it is a pier.

A friend's houseboat has two poles like crb talks about (soon to be 3) that are on hand winches and when you get to your destination you just drop them. He's using 2+ inch pipe but this is a big boat. You could probably get away with some 1" or 1 1/4" schedule 40 galvanized pipe. Just make a sleeve out of square tubing with braces, etc and bolt it to the boat. Then drop the pole in and put a galvanized eye bolt on the bottom of the pole. I'd recommend a small winch but you could probably pull those up by hand somehow and lock them in place with a cleat or something. His have an electric winch on the biggest one as it is over 2's and 20 feet tall.

It seems like a lot of work too me when all I do is drop and anchor and then tighten up the line .The same with two anchors.

the link brotherkicksave provided shows an interesting mounting option. their bracket looks a lot like a trolling motor bracket. Maybe just mount an old bracket found on CL or ebay and use it to put the pole through.

Peronally I just read the current drop an anchor, drift into place, takes maybe 2 minutes.

Curious how well a pole system works when bubba speed demon throws a big wake at you.

There are an awful lot of "one star" reviews on that site!

Yeah, but there are several great reviews. The problem with anchor reviews is ther are a lot of people that have no idea how to set an anchor or for that matter retrieve one. How many times have you seen anchors with no chain? I don't have that anchor but use a similar design (basic danforth) it always sets and I've always gotten it back. And I'm usually on the river so I deal with currents.

My Digger anchor specifically says "No Chain Required". Well, I've added a chain for this season, and I sure hope it works.

You aren't talking about The Power Pole....there is no easier, quieter, less disturbing way to "anchor" in less than 10 feet of water than the Power Pole, Period, Amen, End of Story.

Re: shallow water anchor system

Last summer we rented a 55' houseboat, and it came equipped with 4 powerpoles. I loved them, they were quick, quiet, and sturdy. They held that boat steady for 5 days. Granted we did not get allot of wind in the cove we were in, However we did get some good gusts and that houseboat could have easily been pushed around but wasn't based just on how it handled in the wind just getting to the cove. I figure if it could keep that thing steady I say my hats off to the inventor.

Re: shallow water anchor system

Finally received my fiberglass rods. This weekend hopefully I can begin cutting threads into them for the connectors and handles then i will put them in the lathe to create tips
