I have looking for a used outboard and several claim to have a "shallow water drive".
What does that mean?

Thanks for any help.

Old Salt
Ahoy, Salt.

OMC used the term "shallow water drive" to describe small engines that had a special foot with about 60 degree angle instead of 90 degrees.

Those engines can be tilted up much farther than normal and still drive water straight back instead of ventilating and shooting water up in the air. Go-Devils remind me of a square stern canoe with a SWD Johnny 3 on it.

I don't remember seeing a shallow water drive foot on anything but 3hp JohnnyRudes, but there may have been others. They were very popular for mounting on river trip canoes.

I would think they would be very desirable on any very shallow displacement hull.

Sorry to be so late responding. Good luck.
