Shark fishing for noob Moriches inlet

Hi, I would love to do some shark fishing this summer but don't know where to start.

What time of year can i catch a shark?

Are there any sharks in the GSB LI?

If I have to go out to the ocean how far and what structure or spots should I head to.

Besides chum,a strong rod and reel, what else will I need (gear, bait, etc)?

Is it safe to shark by myself or with my girlfriend?

What species of shark can I target?

I have 22 foot boat, how far can I go out on a calm day without being in danger?

I really appreciate any response and thank you all in advance!!!!

Also, I have heard that Great White Sharks come through the inlet every year. Is this true?

We strart shark fishing South of LI late June thru Oct.

Get a Capt Segulls Sportfishing chart #OFGPS18, it will show some good structure and wrecks for shark fishing in your area. I have caught plenty of shark within sight of land so you don't have to go very far out.

Gear you need other than you already listed: Shark rigs, baits (bluefish, macks, butterfish), balloons & rubber bands, sinkers, leather gloves, wire cutters.

I prefer three as a minimun crew, 1 on the rod, 1 leader man, one to cut the leader (blueshark) or harpoon if mako or thresher.

I target a lot of smaller shark species in GA on light tackle. Just use wire leaders. Mostly sharks in the 2-5ft range although bigger is always possible.

We catch Atlantic Sharpnose, bonnethead sharks, dogfish, and black tips. Now that I have a bigger boat I am going to be targeting larger sharks this summer.

The Sharks start showing up here when water temps get to about 65 deg. I dont know how it is in your neck of the woods. (water temp here today is 63.7 deg)

I was alone on my boat and had caught a 5ft blacktip and had him beside the boat and was having trouble lifting him over the gunwale of the boat when I said to myself why do I want this live 5ft shark alone in the boat with me? Them things HAVE teeth!!

Here we can catch sharks up to about ten ft from the beach and larger sharks at reefs within 25 miles. For a boat your size I wouldnt go much over 20 mi off shore except on a REALLY calm day. I would look closely at fuel capacity and milage of the boat (if you need to bring fuel cans u are going to far in my opinion) also the range of your radio and off shore survival gear (do you have an EPIRB for distress etc)

Wow, thanks for all the great information. I had about given up on this thread because nobody was responding. I am glad I checked tonight. I can't wait for the summer to get here. I will post back hopefully with some shark pic's in the early summer. I am going to take all the advise, use it and study it. Thank you.

Sharkfighter. I also fish the Ga Coast. Usually out of Savannah. Based out of Ft McCallister (I used to be at Ilse of Hope). Going out this weekend, Fri & Sat, I usually fish inshore in the bays and inlets. Just glad to see I'm not alone out there!
