new here so bear wth me.. i have 87 searay w/ 165merccruiser i/o i am having a little truoble w my reverse.. going into forward is great but when the boat is running and im in forward slowing down very slow and trying to go into nuetral it is very hard to pull the shifter back and then it will just jump into reverse and then if i push forward it will go into nuetral. if im just sitting and try to go into reverse it will grind a little then clunk into reverse but sometimes the rpm will alrready be increasing before ot goes into reverse.
so i checked the motor space and noticed some metal shavings near the rear of the motor were the inboard attaches to the motor. and there was a little plug laying there looked like a drain plug but smaller mabye 3/4 of an inch long and 5/16 wide wondering if ther is a resavour for tranny fluid or something mabye i have no fluid and its grinding the gears .
as you can tell from description this is my first boat and im not to mechanically inclined..
the boat only has 350 hrs on the entire boat as it sat for a lot of years only being used once a year then having fluids changed and stored for the next year.

Re: shavings and plug?

Your transmission is located in the lower unit of the outdrive and it is normal for alphas to "clunk" into gear.

However - the shifter uses cables that are prone to both stretching and sticking. Go to the adults only section and download the merc manuals, then make sure your cables are adjusted properly. If this doesn't fix the problem, and I have my doubts, then you will need new cables. They are available right here at iboats.

As for the metal shavings at the rear of the engine - most likely they are from your coupler. The coupler splines are aluminum, while the input shaft on your drive is made of SS. The are very sensative to alignment and lack of lubrication. Do you know is the engine is properly aligned? Has the coupler been greased?

Re: shavings and plug?

i have just purchased the boat and i dont think any greasing or adjusting have taken place by the previouse owner. as for the alignment of the engine it is the stock motor and has never been changed or messed with. he told me when i bought it that he had replaced one of the cables so i dont know what type of work he does but it semmed to work fine when we bought it then after a couple of times taking it out it started to give us trouble. i will download the manual as you suggested and if you could further elaborate on the greasing i would appreciate it. as for the shaving that is good info as i noticed the shavings were not rusting so i feel that you have to be right.
should i worry about the shavings and if so what do you suggest.
sounds to me like i should replace all cables and have everthing pro adjusted. hoping that i did not ruin the stainless steel. oh and by the way i appreciate you responding and it is just nice to be here . just tryin to learn more

The only way to see what condition your coupler is in, is to remove the drive. It is also the only way to align the engine, which is supposed to be done every year. While the engine may have never been removed, it is mounted to wood and fiberglass which have twisted, settled and sagged over the lst two decades.

Re: shavings and plug?

If nothing is leaking, that plug could have come from anywhere. Probably dropped when replaced and someone was just too lazy to fish it out.
