Hello friends, Three months ago i bought my first boat. Shes a Mach 1 challenger alpha 1 gen 1 v6 Mer. Dont know much about the motor but i am learning. Wife is real happy with me right now:mad:. So i changed impeller and pump took her out yesterday ran great for a few hours. I shut her down for an hour .She fired up but when put in gear forward and reverse she dies I can feel her going in gear but with a little gas she dies. Any suggestions? I would appreshate it. THINK the lingage on lower unit needs adjusting?

What rpm does the tach show when you shift into gear? If too low, it will stall easily. If it's up around 500-600 should be ok. If it has a shift assist switch, could be a stiff cable.

Thanks Wire2, Not sure about the rpm. I will hook up the muffs tomorow and see what she does. As far as a stiff cable does that mean replace it? Could I have messed up the lingage when changeing impeller.Had a tuff time lineing up lower unit and brass shift shaft was loose.

Re: She dies when put in gear

If it has an ESA, (Electronic Shift Assist) and the shift cable resists motion, it may be killing the ignition.
How easy does it go in/out of gear when running?

If it has an ESA, (Electronic Shift Assist)

alpha one does not have a shift assist - it has a shift interrupt switch that allows for shifting from gear (fwd/rev) into neutral - even without the shift interrupter, the drive will shift into gear fine, just won't come out easy

most likely the shift cable needs replacement - no way to change the shift cable setting when installing the drive

I had the same problem last year, and once this year.

Check your fuel filter/water separator. Mine would run fine on the muffs and at idle, (very low demand), and would die under load. A simple fix if that's the problem. I'd check that before messing with linkages.

I keep a spare separator, and a jar to check it, on the boats now.

Re: She dies when put in gear

......if you are not BRISKLYshifting into either gear AND there is the slightest bit of resistence in the lower shift cable and/or the upper shift shaft bushings, the interrupt switch my just be killing the engine.
Try shifting into gear BRISKLY rather than slowly.
From personal experience, we had an accumulation of crud just forward of the shift lever on the upper shift shaft that was causing our V-20 to die out going into reverse. Shifting with a more pronounced effort helped but cleaning the crud out solved our problem. :)
