I just rebuilt my 1986 evinrude 70hp with fresh pistons and new bearings.
It was 7pm yesterday and I decided to break it in on the lake.
So i ran it at high idle for about 10 minutes and then rode around with just enough speed to plan for about 15 minutes with a couple short bursts of WOT and then back down to minimum planning speed. I think that covers the break in???
It was tough to not want to go WOT because the engine feels real strong. From idle to full it pulls real nice. Throws you back in the seat. Huge difference compared to my tired 75hp Stinger running on 2 cylinders.
1. I was just wondering how much WOT these motors can take? Like how long can you stay there?
I'd like this engine to last, so i'm determined to take good care of it. so i'm using regular 87 gas (50:1) with synthetic outboard 2 stroke mixing oil. I eliminated the VRO system, and using OEM inline fuel filter.
2. Where can i find the wires on the engine to hook up a tachometer? i don't think i have the 3 plug connector at the control unite.
3. How often is it recommended to replace the lower unite gear oil?
4. Can more performance be expected if using 97 octane gas? not recommended?
