First let me say I know little about props. Is it possible for a propeller with a shear pin drive to have a spun hub? I thought a prop either had one or the other (shear pin or rubber hub). I'm having problems with a newly purchased motors top speed. I bought it without a prop and found the one pictured on e-bay. It is the one I am using and I am getting very poor top speed with an otherwise very good running motor. I think my problem is somewhere else but I was just wondering if this shear pin driven prop could also have a spun hub? The inner hub is smooth (no splines).

It is possible that the hub is spun. I had a 1972 Johnson 25hp with a prop that looked alot like yours and I spun the hub in it. My prop was most likely as old as the motor and we all know what happens to rubber when it gets old. This is how I checked mine: with the boat on land and the prop installed remove the plug wires to prevent accidental start, put the motor in gear and see if you can turn the prop with out making the engine turn over. I was able to put my motor in gear and turn the prop by hand without turning the motor over. Just make sure when you try to turn it you won't turn the motor backwards that may cause damage to your water pump. Mine hade a 9x10 prop I think and would push a 15ft Starcraft open bow aluminum 60inch beam with 3 group 29 batteries bow trolling motor 6 gal of gas, 2 anchors at 15lbs each and 2 guys at 200lbs each at 16mph on my GPS if that gives something to compare yours to.

My new hub was $50.00 two years ago

Thanks for the reply but after having a chance to work on the motor today I think I found my problem. It is only getting spark on one cylinder. The motor (it's a 1956 15HP johnson) was running so good with no other symptoms of problems except top speed, that I was thinking it might have been the prop. But it was only running on one cylinder. Gonna work on the spark problem and hopefully that should solve my top speed problem.
