Sheared a roll pin, and broke a bit

I have an 86 bayliner with the 2.3 volvo AQ131A motor, and I took it out this weekend and the bolt at the end of the auxillary shaft that holds the pulley to the shaft came loose causeing the little roll pin to shear, this has happend before and the sheared roll pin came right out. Now I have worked on it for hours and hours trying easyouts and everything with no luck. Then to top it off, my father broke a bit off in the hole when he was trying to drill it out. My question is, if I can line up the two current holes and drill a new hole in the pulley and in the end of the shaft for a new roll pin, will this work? as long as the old holes line up? This should keep the timing the same right? Thanks for any advice you may have!

I'm not familiar with the part you are working on but can you not use a small punch to drive out the broken pin?

Re: Sheared a roll pin, and broke a bit

Thanks for the reply, there does not seem to be an "out the back" It seemes to be about a 3/4 inch hole and even if there was an opening in the back I would have to remove the auxillary shaft, and the distributor, that is a little more than I am comfortable doing. I would say my mechanical skills are limited. Thanks! Any other ideas? I am open for anything.

I would try and mark the opposit side of the shaft as close to where the hole would come out on the other side of the shaft if it were drilled all the way through. Once you mark it turn the engine by hand until the shaft turns 180 degrees and the spot you marked will be where you can drill until you just hit the roll pin. Do not try to drill the pin, it is hardened will break the bit again. You should start with a drill smaller than the roll pin and than drill to the same size as the pin. Once it is drilled try to knock it out and the piece of broken bit with a pin punch. Good luck.
