Yikes, I thought I finally had my 3.0L OMC cobra running smoothly when another disaster. I was out on the water and the engine started pinging, I looked down to see that it had overheated. I shut it down checked around and finally found that the shaft that drives the impeller pump on the out drive had sheared off???? The impeller was fine as was the oil level in the outdrive. What the flock...... From what I can see after a quick peek at the parts manual, I'm screwed as this shaft is actually part of the major u-joint assy in the upper unit. Some one tell me if you can what would cause this to break off almost cleanly? And am I really screwed on this, like major bill for overhaul of upper? Thanks

Re: sheared impeller shaft

It may have broken just due to metal fatugue. Not a common problem, but not unheard of either. I suppose you could also send the shaft to a metalurgist (sp) and have it analized to find the exact reason, but usually the 2 to 3000 bucks that requires turns people off
It will take a new shaft......and no, it's not cheap either.

Re: sheared impeller shaft

Can I pull the U-joint assembly and replace just the water pump shaft (pn-984264) provided the stub shaft is ok (pn-984264)???

Are any special tools required to do so? It doesn't appear so from looking at my repair manual?

thanks again,
Pat

Re: sheared impeller shaft

After this many tries, obviously no one has experience replacing the shaft. Like I said in my previous post...... "It's not cheap either"

Sorry I didn't add my 2 cents earlier.I believe the stub end of the shaft is NLA,and you have to replace the whole shaft.(if it is still available.)

DHP

I agree whith DPH
the last one I did the stub was NLA. now GLM or sierra may make one. to replace the input shft requires dissasembly of the upper housing. not a job for the DIY.
sorry
good luck and keep posting
