Here in B.C., there is no boat reg fee.
After buying the boat, all you have to do it buy insurance for the trailer and boat....that's it.
My insurance for the trailer is around $60.
Insurance for the boat...nil....my home insurance company will not insure my trailer, so I have no boat insurance at the moment.

small boats less than 16' $16.50 for 3 years
16'+ thru 26' ................$29.00 for 3 years
26'+ thru 40' ..................$50.00 for 3 years

Trailers under 3000# gross, free, no plates.

These are kept cheap by our state constitution, which states something like "fees must only be levied to cover the cost of the services." So they can't use registrations and fees to generate extra revenue for the state.

Hmmm... I just paid it when I bought the boat... but it was lumped into a bunch of other state and federal CRAP fees... so I couldn't tell you...

In Calilfornia -

The big boat (35-ft’er) is documented, one time fee of $125 to the USCG, or something like that.

The small boat (10-ft’er) a.k.a. dinghy, does not need to be registered, propelled by oars.

And the boat that is just the right size (18-ft’er) is, well, I don’t know how much it costs. Woman does the paper work. I think it is $20 for the boat and another $10 for the trailer every year.
