Plastic: Due to the diverse nature of plastic
substrates, a coating or coating system must
be tested for acceptable adhesion to the substrate
prior to use in production. Reground
and recycled plastics along with various fire
retardants, flowing agents, mold release
agents, and foaming/blowing agents will affect
coating adhesion. A filler or primer/barrier
coat may be required. Please consult
your Sherwin-Williams Chemical Coatings
Sales Representative for system recommendations.

This was copied and pasted from the Sherwin Williams brochure. Doesn't sound like the ideal coating for fiberglass. Seems to be geared toward industrial equipment like tractors, backhoes, etc. I'd give them a call about fiberglass and below the water line.

Re: Sherwin Williams Polane Plus

I have an aluminum boat, not glass. Guess I should've specified that.

I'm going to call today, and I'll see what they say.

I assumed glass, sorry my bad, I should know what happens when we assume. Could be fine for aluminum, I'm sure they'll recommend a primer coat for you to use first.

Apparently it's a sister product to the automotive Genesis line.

I think I'm just going to opt to use the Genesis. Apparently most of the local big builders use Genesis on all the factory boats as well.

Re: Sherwin Williams Polane Plus

I didn't look at the site to check if its the same as regular Polane, regular Polane is a 2 part PU.

But I've used a great deal of Polane, it was marketed to the Industrial market, but works great on fiberglass and most anything else. Its also re-labeled by smaller distributors and sold in the composites industry for boats and such.

What matters is the primer used, not really the substrate, if the primer sticks then so will the paint over it. In this case "can it be used on aluminum", the Polane only knows its over primer, it has no clue as to what?s under the primer.

It works great on fiberglass without primer, but that wasn't part of the question.

How well has it been holding up?

The person I spoke with at Sherwin Williams (first person anyway) didn't seem to think it would hold up, but she didn't seem to be doing much more than reading a spec sheet.

Its a high end coating and holds up very well, much better than any of the single part marine paints and about the same as the best 2 part marine paints.

That works for me. The main thing is that with this being winter and all...that I only have to heat the shop for a day. Having to heat the shop for 4-5 days would cost more than what the better paint does vs EasyPoxy (which I already have purchased and need to return)

Easypoxy is absolute garbage. Get it out of your possession before it ruins your life like it did mine

I have never use the Polane series..

but..

If your Painting a D8 cat..this might be good.. ( or some other Inerior/exterior steel machine )

Id walk away from this product if I was me....but you are you and I would be more then happy to find out your outcome of such a product.

Wonder why they dont say anything about Cure time till sand and polish on there data sheets ( yes I looked over about 6 different products including the HS and polys ).

Bottom line is this is not a Marine paint..its not even Auto LOL..

Im sure there are Great Latex or Oil based paints that you can buy for your house ( it in the outdoors..its weathered..) that has a 10 year lable on it...will you Paint your car or boat with those products ??.

YD.

PS. No I havent looked at the Whole SW site to suggest a better SW paint. .. I can tell you there are alot of Good paints out there..but the good ones your going to have to pay for .. the others..well you might be able to buy your plasma TV this year instead of coating your boat :) .

Oh come on now, your life isn't ruined! It's just your boat that you have to throw away!:D

(Shoot me a pm when you are putting it out to the curb, I assume it takes a 2" ball. Just sign the title and tape it to the windshield - I'll take care of it from there.)
