I have been dealing with my boat and some shifting issues and I have checked the play in the cable and it seems to be in specification and I have gone though a bunch of shifting videos but I am not understanding one thing with the boat out of the water and I move the shiftier to forward or backward.and spin the prop manually the way I have it setup now is the prop spins with a clicking sound this seems to be working ok but I am not sure if it's correct when I was playing around with the adjustments I could get it to go fully in to forward but clicking in reverse or going fully in reverse but clicking in the forward. it's a 1975 crest-liner with a 165 mercury inline 6.

yup there are lots of parts.....I followed this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s_tgevX2aI to check adjustments it just really advise what I am suppose to get at the prop when I am doing the celebration. it does say to lock in forward. but my idea is that it should lock both ways but it does not seem to want to. someone else suggested it was suppose to lock going forward and ratchet or click going backwards. if that is true I can make it do it...but I want to see if anyone knows for sure.

I did not have that manual but that is a good one thanks.

When in forward the prop should lock up if you turn it CCW. It will ratchet when turned CW.

When in reverse the prop will lock when turned CW. It will ratchet when turned CCW.

What I do. ASSUMING everything on the drive is correct
start with the movable post in the middle position of the arm
control box in full fwd
lower control cable pushed inward while turning the prop CCW untill locked
attach lower cable to stud
adjust barrel to fit slotWhile turning the prop CW ,move control box to full rev ,does prop lock CW Yes=your done, No= procede
loosen adjustable stud and move upward slightly, retest
does it lock CW in rev Yes= your done
