I could use some help with adjusting my shift and throtle cables. While re-upohlstering this year i decided it would be a good idea to replace the throtle and shift cables( the lower shift cable was replaced last year by a pro). So I did and like an amature i did not mark the old ones on where they were adjusted so I could set the new ones. So now I have been messing with the adjustments and have gotten them close but still not correct. It seems as thought I have to move the shifter too far before it engagaes in foward and at times it doesnt want to come out of gear without over-shifting and the shifter doesnt seem to stop at the "neutral" position or lock I should say. I am also afraid that I will red line the motor too far due to all of this. Can anyone out there tell me if there is a gauage or a tool that will perfectly set all the cables? I thought I saw somewhere before that there is a measurement to guide in this. Thanks for any help with this.
I have an '87 Merc Alpha 1

Re: Shift Adjustments

Go up to the adults only sticky at the top of this forum, and download service manual #6. Section 2 covers the adjustments in detail with pictures.
