Like everyone else I'm always looking for a way NOT to have to remove the drive. My question is: can I change the shift bellows w/o removing the drive by turning hard to port, trimming up and pulling the cable?

Cant be done!!Do yourself a favor and remove the drive so you can inspect and lube the ujoints and gimbal bearing and also lube the shifter arm etc.IF the rubber on the shift is bad the others may not be far behind so consider making a complete job of it.Charlie

yep, what charlie said. inner cable comes out the back, then sheath is removed. good luck with the brass nut. and i don't think your old style cable is made anymore. look at all the post and websites on the subject. http://www.mercstuff.com/shiftcable1.htm

Re: shift bellows replacement-pre-alpha

Ooops! forgot to mention!. I just did the gimbal/u-joint...it's all good but I think when I put it together I had extended the shift bellows too much and then when testing the trim (up) it must have ripped. Of course you don't find this stuff out until you put it in the water. Brass nut? Is that on the aft end of the cable? And already up graded the cable (last time I did shift bellows). Oh well...guess I'll just pull the drive again...Thanks guys.

Re: shift bellows replacement-pre-alpha

I am in the process of replacing all my bellows, gimbal bearing, and seals. Is it just me or is it ridiculously difficult to get the drive shaft bellows on the bell housing? I put the raw water house, shift boot, and exhaust bellows on fist. Now I am having a heck of a time. Is there some kinda trick or something???

its rediculously difficult. but then I did not design it I just fix them
after you do a few hundred its not really very hard. I did my first one in 78 :)
good luck, follow the manual closely and save the cool refreshing beverages until after its done.

Question: Is it easier to put the U-joint bellows on the bell housing first, then tighten it, then slide it over the transom tube. Or the other way?

Same degree of difficulty both ways. Yes, it's a pr*ck of a job. But Mercruiser have gone one better with the Gen II's. NOW it's a complete pr*ck of a job, even with the right tool!
