Shift Bracket Assembly location?

Bond-o, Don, others... Is there any reason that the shift bracket assembly has to be mounted on the exhaust manifold or even on top the engine (mercruiser alpha v-8). As long as the cables aren't binding, it's securly mounted and the wires are connected correctly, is there any good reason it can't be mounted anyplace else as long as the location is dry and protected? the top of my engine compartment is a tight squeeze, but I have tons of room to the sides. I'm already replacing / redoing the engine wiring harness and have everything apart. Things would fit better if I could mount it to the side. Thanks!

Thanks!! That's what I thought, but sometimes I miss things and learn them the hard way.
