As soon as you touch cables, they need a tweak, for some reason.

This really is not that complicated.....
Put the helm in forward.....
Push the unhooked cable end in & turn the prop ccw to lock....
Adjust the barrel to 6" from center of eye to center of eye (cable end).....
My guess is that they will fit right over the studs.....
From the sound of it you are OK, Zig.....
Ya might have to fiddle with it a little, like Don says, but you will be close....;)

I just finished this on my dad's boat a few weeks ago. It was the first time I had installed and adjusted a cable set up like his - and I think like yours. The one with the reverse lock out switch that the cables hook onto - correct?

Anyway, it's not as difficult as it sounds. Haut has it correct. The only thing to add is after putting the helm in forward, you then "dismount" the control cable from where it is attached. After adjusting the shift cable to the six inch setting, and ensuring that the unit is in forward, put it on and don't change that setting again. You then match the control cable so it fits onto the posts. It is that simple.

Some say to match it up, then turn the barrel an additional 4 turns.... I think the more important aspect is to try and understand what happens to the cables when you shift so you will know which way to adjust if either reverse or forward is giving you a problem.

The real key is to only adjust the control cable - not the lower shift cable.

See? Easy! ;)

yep, that's the way i see it.... that is also roughly what item 4 says in the service manual.

i hear what yer saying man. time will tell if i need to adj. the control cable or not....

yep, that'd be correct fm.....

that, i didn't do fm. though i have read the instructions.

i'm going on the assumption that since i didn't have an issue prior to teardown. and that the old shift cable was 6'' and so is the new. so i've left that adj. alone........... for now...... i think i need to try it in the water 1st and see where i'm at..... if i have issues, then i will do the remote adj. at that point. yes. i agree. once the shift cable is set at 6''. i don't recokon that if there's an issue, that it would be at that end......
thanks again folks. it sure does help to have folks to talk to about adjustments sometimes....i appricieate all the input.....

Correct; once the lower cable is right, any more adjustments are in the remote/control. the lower leg is happy- the remote throw distance comes in now.
