well I have adjusted the shift cables and I think one of the cables needs replaceing. But whish one would need replaceing? I adjusted the drive cable according to all the instructions i could find. I pushed the cable all the way in locked the prop in a counter clock wise motion and held it there with a bungee strap. I then adjusted the brass barrell on the cable to 6 in center to center. Placed it back on the shift bracket. Adjusted the remote shift cable to fit on the bracket and put that on. I then adjusted the reverse by moving the stud to get it to lock into reverse. I then tested the ratching in both forward and reverse. In forward there is alot of tension when you psin the prop clockwise. In reverse there is almost no resistance when you spin the prop counter clockwise. Also when you start the motor and shift into gear forward shifts almost as soon as you move the lever forward. Reverse does not lock in untill the lever is almost all the way back. Also Forward seems to lick in and sound ok but reverse does not seem to lock all the way in and you can hear like a ratcheting sound. I have two levers one for throttle and one for gear selecting and if you put the gear selecting one in forward all the way the motor will stall because the interupt switch is then pushed and held to kill the motor. I then adjusted the remote control cable back to where i found it with the brass barrell all the way against the cable sheath and I am back where i started the motor doesnt stall and it will shift into forward and reverse but its like it does lock completely in because it sounds like its ratcheting in both forward and reverse.

From what you describe you still have the shift out of adjustment. You should have equal tension on the dogs in F and R. If not your neutral needs adjusting.

I agree that the adjustment is out of whack but I have tried everything I think the cable is shot. How do you adjust neutral?

Push the cable in to forward gear and mark/note the position, pull to reverse and note position. place in center and adjust helm shift cable to that position. This is called nominal neutral.

Forward is only adjustable this way. The slot is for reverse travel adjustment.

Re: Shift Cable adjustment?????

Ok ill try to ajust the neutral before I tear apart the the outdrive for about the 6th time this year......I hope it fixes it and yes that is how i adjusted the reverse is with the post and slot on the shift mechinisam but it just seems like theres not enough cable to get it to go into reverse so maybe the adjusting the neutral will do the trick

Either that or you need to replace the lower shift cable, also very common.

Re: Shift Cable adjustment?????

I thought the same thing when I changed my outdrive. With the drive off the lower cable should move back and forth very easy if so the lower cable is good. Which is what mine was doing until I put th eoutdrive on and it was harder to move.

Turns out the set screw was tight against cable not backed off up to 1/8 turn and it did not have the safety wire on it. The Shift slide should spin 360? easily mine would not spin at all. Once I got that done and greased up the slide put the drive back on the lower shifted smoothly with the drive on.

Mine has never shifted so nicely.
