I just repaced all bellows and lower shift cable on a1996 Alph1 Gen 2. I did all the adjustments as described in the shop manual, and the shifter seems stiff. Both cables move freely when not attached to the bracket, but when connected and adjusted correctly, the movement is stiff. I routed the new cable the same as before by pulling a string through when removing the old cable. Any suggestions to get the shifter to move more freely.

Try disconnecting the throttle cable at the throttle body then reconnect the shift cables and see if there is a difference. If that works then back off the throttle body cable where it just closes the throttle body. There may be too much closing pressure on the throttle stop.

Pretty sure. It moves freely when not attached to shift bracket.

Sorry took so long to get back. When the lower is disconnected, it moves freely as well

When you replaced the cable you would have run the new cable through the slider that sits in the cavity in the drive. That's the one that has the fingers on it and moves the upper shift shaft lever. At the back of the slider is a wire-locked grub-screw. When you wound the grub-screw in, did you leave it slightly loose, so the slider could rotate freely on the cable? If you 'tightened' it onto the cable end, there's your stiffness.
