If there was corrosion in that area, your upper shift shaft seal may be shot and allowing water to get into that area. I went through that with an 888 drive - freshwater only but there was a ton of white corrosion in the shift slide area - it was evident that water was getting in there and it could be traced to the upper shift shaft seal.

I was referring to the corrosion on the outside of the shift sleeve between the lower unit and gimbal housing/ transom.

That sounds like the area I was referring to. Is the corrosion in the area where the shift slide (the 3" long fork looking thing that interfaces with the roller on the lever attached to the upper shift shaft in the gimbal housing) is located? If so, the shaft seal is probably bad and allowing water to get in that area.

No there is no corrosion in that area
