I have a hole in shift bellow and need to get it replaced. I have posted a form hear about it as well and found that it can be changed without taking off the out drive. has any one done this before?? guess you disconect from the block and pull through to the outdrive replace weed back through connect and good to go? Any cons or pros to this?Shop told me 500 to change bellow but i can get the part for 14 bucks. Dont have the money know for the 500 repair its either find somthing to make me last 3 more weeks or store for winter. What would you do?

I have heard 1000 times i should pay and have them all done but the other ones are new. So it doesnt make sense.

I also tryed to silicone the hole but the next moring touched it and it all came off on my finger clump of it like it came out. Is this bad silicone was almost a year old and already open but did have a cap on it. SHOULD I GET NEW SILCONE AGAIN AND TRY IT ANYONE THINK IT WILL WORK?

With drive down hole is closed and no water gets in trailer up and its comes in.

Drive has to come off, you'll see why when you take it apart.

It may be possible depending on how high you can tilt the outdrive, there needs to be sufficent space to coil the shift cable underneath the bellhousing (without damage) and to remove and replace the bellow.

It is possible to replace without removing the outdrive but if you damage the shiftcable you have to remove the outdrive anyhow. I would pull the drive and replace the all the bellows because your in there anyway

Why are you so worried about taking the drive off?????

It takes literally less than 5 minutes - Put the boat in FWD gear, take off the 6 bolts on the back of the drive and the 2 nuts that hold the hydraulic cylinders on - pull it off and lay it on the ground. It weighs about 70 pounds.

If you try to pull the cable out of the boat from the outside without taking the inner cable out, you're going to kink it, then have to pull the outdrive anyway and replace the $100 lower shift cable ......

You may fix the bellows, but ruin the shift cable.

See that's how you do it, make friends with people, it'll save you piles. I just helped my neighbor, help his son's friend, remove/rebuild/re-install an alpha unit. No biggy, between the three of us took about 3-4 hours. Each man had a job depending on his skill level.

Yea, did you read my post before instead of me paying 500 + i found a boat mech who will do it for a 12 pack and 100 bucks lot more eaiser to come up with that. And he's going to show me how to do it so i will know how to do it in the future.

Ok So I Called The Shop To Day To Get The Shift Bellow. Called 3 Diffrent Places Until I Found On That I Can Pick Up Today And Dont Have To Order. I Asked The Mech If They Have Every Replaced A Shift Bellow With Out Taking Off The Lower Unit And There Replay Was All The Time. One Guy Said That You Would Be Stupid To Take Of The Lower Unit Just To Replace The Shift Cable, Would Create Alot More Work And Time For Your Self. Soooo Is There Anyone Out Here A Mech That Can Say They Do This Or Is Everyone Just Thinking Me And The Other Guy Are Crazy Still. Lol :)

i believe most people prefer to change all the bellows in full sets so they don't have to jack with replacing them 1 at a time.

have you tried posting this in the mechanical section?... http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

Can I chime in? OK, thanks.

Whether or not, blah, blah, blah. I think the important thing here is that there are two ways to do anything. The right way and the wrong way.
They both may give you the same outcome, but that is as far as that argument goes.
By removing the outdrive, you are now at a significant advantage. You can inspect the shaft, U-joints, gimbal bearing, O-rings, and the alignment of the motor. As well as greatly reduce the risk of damaging parts and wasting time.
We have a saying here at work, "you are never going to be any closer than you are right now".

The mech i spoke with said that its a waste of time to take off the outdrive just to replace a shift cable if all other bellows are good. and that it would be pointless to take it off. But i do see where you comming from saying its a good thing but i wouldnt say its the wrong way to do it if local mechanics are doing it that way for years without problems. Just my 2 cents mine will be done tommorw.

You may want to find another mechanic. I really hate to tell you this since you're apparently on some kind of CAPS kick and I may have to try to decipher your reply, but there is NO WAY to change a shift cable without removing the outdrive.
