Shift cable is stiff shifting to neutral?

I have a 1995 Century with a 5.7l/alpha one. Last year I replaced the throttle/shifter control and replaced the throttle cable along with it. I can't remember if I replaced the shift cable along with the throttle cable or not. It was working perfectly, smooth as silk shifting. I stored it in a building over the winter, while i did various repairs/upgrades to the boat. I did have to replace the shift cable going from the engine to the outdrive. I followed the manual and had it adjusted to what the book said. When I first started it up this spring on muffs, the shifting was off a bit so I turned the barrel nut a bit and got it shifting as it needed to be. I took the boat out to the lake yesterday and I noticed it felt like it was binding up when shifting from forward/reverse into neutral. Not very bad, but I did have to use some extra force when shifting it,a couple times I actually ended up throwing it in reverse when trying to put it in neutral from forward gear.

I haven't had a chance to look at the cables, but is there something in particular I should look at? I can't remember if it was stiff when I was running it on muffs or not. I only noticed it once I was on the water.

Need to adjust your shift interrupter switch. The Alpha needs to make the motor miss slightly to unload the dog clutch. If motor does not miss it won't shift into neutral.

Thanks, I will check my interrupter switch. Ive been busy and havent had a chance to look at it yet, but tonight i think i'll finally be able to look at it.

Also, when I try to go to that website (mercstuff.com) it says I do not have access to view it? Never had that happen before

I finally had a chance to look at it. Turns out that the top bolts that mount the shift cable bracket to the exhaust riser had backed out and allowed the bracket to tilt downward. I bolted it back up in place and seems to be better now, I won't know for sure until I can put it in the water though.

Thanks for giving me an idea where to start looking
