If you push the core inward and you come out of gear the lower is in reverse. The lower unit spline must rotate clockwise . This will have the brass shoe in a straight line. Rotating CCW is neutral and reverse.

1. Is it possible that when I put the lower and upper unit together, that the lower was not in forward gear? No question that the shoe is facing the right way when I put on the drive, and I tested the drive to make sure it was going into each gear before installing the drive onto the bell housing.

It will go into a gear but are you rotating it the correct way for forward. With the splined shaft all the way clockwise the prop will be locked CCW. locking cw is reverse

Ok, now we are cooking. I went back, took it all apart and started over. Took the drive off, took the lower and upper apart to double check everything, and when I got all back together, did the cable adjustments as per the video and everything worked as it should! THANK YOU THANK YOU, I was getting frustrated, just need to walk away and get back to square one.
Will be starting her up later today on muffs to see how it shifts, but I bet it will all be fine..............
