I've have shifting issue with this 1989 searay 165 alhpa1 r/mr since I replaced the gimbel bearing and all the bellows except the shift boot. In here I have seen issues with replies that state to adjust the shifter for a mesurement of 6 inches and others that stated allowed movements of like 9/16 of an inche at the cable slide.
I've searched most of this forum and tried everything that I have found, with no improvements. I even removed the outdrive again an as I was placing it back on making sure that the cable slide wouldn't bind by use of needle nose pliers. nearing my wits end, with the boat on the trailer armed with a 45 deg. needle nose pliers I reached into the outdrive to see if there was any movement at the exposed shifter "T" it wasn't fully engauged. Looking over everything i found that the shifter cable between the transom and bellhousing had movement. when the cable was moved farther aft i had complet engaugment of forward gear along with N and rev. at the controls. I cycled threw this several time and lifted the outdrive to it's full title postion. my question is this what retaining device is there at the point the cable pass's threw the transom and to stop it from backing out? I can see the retaining nut after the outdrive is removed does this jam onto the cable like a compression fitting or is it threaded? Or could this be a possibale broken outer cable?
