This week end I pulled the outdrive to repolace the Bellows, Shift Cable, U-Joints , Gimbal Bearing, Trim senders and Water pump.

It started fine and then two screws for the trim senders one on each side would not come out and yes they broke , I do the water pump no problem, I do the U-Joints no problem.

I go to take the shift cable off and BIG problem  the end that is in th bell housing the thread part brakes off in side the bell housing yes I did get the shift cable off by cutting it and pulling it out but now I have part of thread still in the bell housing.

On top of all this the Gimbel bearing looks like it has rust on it but the bellows did not have a hole in it.

I still need to get the shift cable thread out of the bell housing, So I went to try and find what size thread it is but no good, so if some one knows what size thread it is I was thinking I would be able to re-tap it.

Sorry for the long post but this week has not been fun at all , It started out ok but went south fast.

Just because you can't see any major holes in the bellows, doesn't mean it wasn't leaking.

Can't help you with thread pitches, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give you an answer.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Good luck!

Ya didn't stump me, Guess I missed it.

I go to take the shift cable off and BIG problem the end that is in th bell housing the thread part brakes off in side the bell housing yes I did get the shift cable off by cutting it and pulling it out but now I have part of thread still in the bell housing.

I have been able to get those out by drilling progressively bigger holes while keeping the drill absolutely centered in the hole. Usually I can use a special chisel I made to carefully dig the brass pieces out of the aluminum threads. Time and patience is the only thing that will get them out.
It also takes a special tap to clean the threads. It a 1/4-28 NPT STRAIGHT thread NOT tapered thread.

For the screws you broke off for the senders. Grind the old ones down flush then drill and tap new holes beside the old ones.

I did not mean it in a negative way about stumping any one I was surprised that I got nothing about the size tap after 8+ hours that's all.

ringmaster

thanks for your reply,

dons

thanks for your reply also.

so you say just drill new holes that will be faster then trying to take the old screws out. I also have some screws that broke for the continuity cables that I need to do. I assume I can do the same thing with them. By the way do you happen to know the tap size for the screws.

If I had some new stickers and paint,... hmmmmmm

All this and I have only been out on it once (just to see if it leaks and runs). wow but when I got the boat I got as a project for me and my son and now we are just about ready to take it it for fun and not just a test.

I must say it has been fun doing the work.;)

IF they are broken off flush or a little below the surface of the gimbal ring, absolutely it will be easier. Those are a #10 screw, not sure what the thread count is, and to drill directly into the center and use an ez out to remove them is next to impossible They are corroded SS in an aluminum housing that has been in salt water. Any screws you put back in should have some Perfect Seal put on the threads, then 5 years from now you can get them off again if needed.
Go to your local Merc dealer and get the 4 replacement sender screws, then you will know what thread they are.

Don you say 1/4-28 NPT and some one else has 1/4-18 did you want to say 1/4-18 and hit the 2 in place of the 1 or is it 1/4-28 NPT.

I only ask because I know I hit the wrong key some times.

I just wanted to double check, prior to going out looking for it.

Re: Shift Cable Oooo No

I have to replace the hose that connects to the oil valve assembly from what I think is the oil reservoir, any one know if I need any thing special for this.

Also while going over the water impeller R&R it talks about a water pump seal that I do not remember seeing.

here is a Copy/Past from page 3B-77 of service manual number 14

"Assemble the water pump face seal to a position approximately 1/2 of the way down the
drive shaft. Assemble the water pump face seal setting tool over the drive shaft and push
the seal down onto the water pump with the tool while pulling up on the drive shaft. Remove
the tool from the drive shaft."

My question is is this needed and if so Should it be part of the impeller kit ??

It is a 1/4X18NPS - (National Pipe Straight). Don probably made a typo. ;)

As mentioned, be sure to get NPS - not NPT. You will have trouble finding it. I had to order a tap online.

If you view the water pump part in the on line catalog you should be able to see the seal in question is one of the two seals in the water pump BASEE, these seals keep to outdrive oil and the water pump seperated.

Replacement of that is is not usually required during water pump impeller replacement,

UNLESS, you fried the old impeller by starting the engine out of the water and forgot to turn on the garden hose. (Been there)(Once)

If you look on page 3B-77 you will see the seal I'm talking about, on mine it was NOT there when I opened it, so I did nothing with it.

The seal is item a
