Shift cable - reverse issue??

Hi all,

Since I've had my boat (last nov) it doesn't like going into reverse gear when the engine is trimmed up at all. When fully trimmed down it will go into reverse no probs. As winter is coming and I'll be doing some bits to it should I be changing the shift cable? Could the reverse issue be a sign of it being on the way out or could something else be at fault? Forward gear is no problem and reverse is fine except if its trimmed up slightly.

It's a '96 alpha one.

Cheers in advance,

D.

Could be a couple of things: Most likely you just need to adjust the shift cable. Look here: http://www.perfprotech.com/store/app_themes/ppt/images/tech-specs/alpha-shift-adjust.pdf Follow the procedure starting on page 86. See if that works.

Let's see...let me just cut and paste the last post I made. 'Bout got it. Almost there. Okay:

"When I performed the shift linkage procedures by the book, the bible, the #6 Service Manual, it wouldn't go into reverse. I repeated the procedure several times, but still, it wouldn't go into reverse. Needed just a bit more travel. I finally just winged it, used common sense, and got it adjusted correctly. Now I have to bump the control lever a bit into forward when coming out of reverse because the shift interrupter isn't right on.

Those procedures are frustrating!" ;)

The bolt that pivots the short shift cable can be adjusted for more reverse. loosen the back nut and move it a little further out in the slot. This only effects the reverse travel so make sure forward is set correctly.

Another issue can be the cable between the boot and the drive, this is a high wear spot, where the housing get gouged and stiff.

Cheers guys,

So adjustment first then? I'll give it a blast. When putting it into reverse it's sounding like its wants to go in but can't quite make it. Hopefully the adjustment will do the trick.
