My mechanic took apart my stringer drive after it was leaking water into the oil. All the seals were good but the jacket on the cable was dry rotted. He epoxied it w/ no guarantees, because this was letting water in. What should i do? he recommended selling the boat because of parts not being made . I saw the whole assembly on ebay seemed very expensive but they did have just the cable was cheaper. I like the boat and really can't afford to get a boat for 10 grand or more. Any suggestions is replacing the cable? is it that difficult ? do they make new ones?
Thanks

Re: shift cable stringer what to do

I have always steered clear of the OMC's cuz of part availability, but I have owned my fair share of boats. if he tried the epoxy I would say, run it a little and see if it holds? Just keep and eye on the oil. Of course I have always been one to try anything once. Sorry, didnt see where you were from, but you might try looking up Checker Marine in Lasalle, MI. Charlie Checke is the owner, and he's the only one around who still works on OMC stringers. The place is a boat salvage yard with a repair section too. Really nice people and reasonably priced. I'm not sure if he'll ship, but worth a shot.
