Shift change oil seal - renewal

I seem to have an oil leak into the chamber above the lower leg. It's definitely gear oil and it collects around the gear change shaft. I've changed the oil seal below the water pump and I'm sure the oil seal where the gear change shaft goes into the leg is duff. Anybody know how to get at this as it looks as though the leg has to be split open?<br />The engine is a Force 50hp, black, s/n 507F8D which I think makes it an 88 model....thanks in advance!....

Drop the lower unit. Remove nuts from front and rear studs, located on top of lower unit. Pull the lower unit apart. THere is a gasket between the 2 parts, don't mess it up or you will have to replace it.

I can only see one nut to remove and that's just in front of the gear change shaft ......am I missing something here?

If your Force is like my Chrysler, you'll have to remove the prop and the prop shaft bearing cage. Then the lower stud will be visible. It would be a good time to change the prop shaft seal too.

You were right. The other nut was behind the prop shaft cage. Thanks for the tip.<br />Now for the second part of the job, replacing the o-ring seal where the shift rod goes into the gearcase housing. Looks like it fits into a washer pressed into the casting. Do you know if it has to come out?

I've got 2 lower units , one is like what you have and the other one just has the seal with no washer. That's the reason I choose the former for my engine. I'll try taking it out and let you know. BTW, does your waterpump housing have 3 or 4 mounting screws and does the housing have its own drive shaft seal on the top?

The waterpump housing has four bolts and it does have its own seal for the driveshaft.....
