Shift/control cable question V8 Alpha 1

I've been battling the shift cable adjustment on a "new to me" boat. 5.7 with an Alpha 1 drive. The previous owner replaced the shift (engine to drive) cable but never adjusted it properly. I attempted to adjust it from various sites and manuals and have it pretty much set but it doesn't seem perfect yet.

Basically, it seems I'm not getting enough "throw" from the control cable to completely engage into gear. It's setup now with the upper cable slot adjustment all the way up. That's the only way I can just barely get both gears to work and not stall.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... I think the Best path to take is, Recheck the PO's work, 'n Verify it's a New lower shift cable, 'n that it's installed, Correctly,....

Previous Owners have been know to say Anything to sell their barge,.....
