It kills the motor momentarily so the shaft disconnects. If it does not do this or does it at the wrong time, your drive will not come out of gear..

Docking is a “B” word without it. You cant get in and out of gear without yanking on the shifter fast enough. There is the second problem. Yanking on the shift lever like that will either brake the shifter or stretch the shifter cable. More problems. Then there is “banging” it into gear without the shift interrupter. That is never a good thing.

Westdevil

Take a look at the FAQ, there's a post explaining this.

The wires to the throttle box is the safety switch preventing starting while in gear. Its not connected to the interruper switch.

What you have is a misrigged upper and lower shift cable. The upper cable neutral position is too far in forward position. Follow the instructions in the FAQ and check out the rigging. One thing to note, the Merc procedure isn't exact, this thing as someone puts it "more art than science". There's a final fine adjustment that is done by the seat of your pants.

If its ok now after your tweaking mentioned in your post, you can leave it as is.
