Shift dog/clutch dog?

I've recently aquired an Evinrude 1962 sportwin 10 hp in excellent condition for my 1954 starcraft boat

The seller told me there might be an issue with the "shift dog" in the lower unit and when I took it to the mechanic he claimed it ran impressively in the tank after runnning it for 1/2 hour. I took it home and ran it on my lake and at first the engine ran sweet however the problem did surface while running at highest RPM

Is this an easy fix?? or have I bought into a mechanical nighmare. I love this engine and it did run real nice at the lower speed

Also I wanted to confirm the mix. The mechanic told me 50:1 and thats what I used. I thought I saw a thread recommending 24:1 which is it?

any feed back is much appreciated

'62 is 24:1.

What are the symptoms you're experiencing that make you think it's a clutch dog?

Re: Shift dog/clutch dog?

hello iwombat, thanks for responding

The motor seems to run well at first, but feels like it loses power for no reason. It seems to suddenly kicks /and/or revs into a high gear and slips.

Lower speeds there is no problem

sounds more like a spun hub than a clutch dog.

i believe 62 still had the shear/drive pin thru the prop shaft and prop. the pins break, and have been known to some how catch. if it is the clutch dog it will feel like the motor hit a log. a loud klunk or bang and the boat jolts. if the prop is spun if will feel like the clutch is slipping on an manual transmission car, going up hill.

are these problems easily fixed as far as parts and labor? Unfortunately, I'm not very mechanical and rely on others for repair.

if it's a spun hub you'll need a prop shop to fix it, or locate a replacement prop. Shear pin is about as easy as it gets. You'll have to remove the prop for either one, so take it off and check out the shear pin. If that's okay have a prop shop verify you've spun a hub.
