Shift Ignition Cut-Out Switch

Quick question in regards to the shift switch mounted on the shift plate on my 110 Mercruiser. On the wiring diagram it shows the switch to be connected from the "-" on the ignition coil to ground, however it also shows a parallel circuit to the tilt switch. Can anyone tell me the purpose of that?

Also if anyone has any spare time maybe give me a quick rundown on how the shift switch works.

shift switch shorts out the ignition just long enough to make the engine studder, so the teeth on the clutch will line up and engage.

trimm isn't parallel, they just share a common ground.

The shift interrupt switch is not used for putting it into gear, only to release the pressure off the reverse cut clutch dogs so they will release when going from either forward or reverse back into neutral.
This will be noticed when in the water, and should not be opperated when on muffs because there is no resistance to force the arm to move.
If the shift interrupt swicth is activating when going into gear or coming out of gear on muffs, something is binding. Usually a lower shift cable.
