My boat feels like it's intermittently losing power. I diagnosed the problem to be the shift interrupt switch. It's engaging/pushing the button when it's not supposed to.

Is this a common problem?

How do I fix it.

Thanks!

Re: Shift Interrupt Switch

If its killing the motor while shifting out of gear in the water, you need a new lower shift cable. but to tell you how to fix it ,you have to tell us what IT is.

Re: Shift Interrupt Switch

It's a 1997 Mercruiser 4.3 Vortec. When I shift forward, it's fine. When I shift back into reverse it wants to stall. If then I shift it into neutral and try reverse again, it's fine.

So you think that a bad shift-cable would do this? It's possible that I tweaked mine when I was replacing a head gasket.

Thanks for your input,
Ryan

Well, if you mean you replaced the head gasket because you overheated, then you may have melted the shift cable where it passes near the exaust Y pipe, that will cause the cable to stiffen up .
