shift interrupt

Bought Delco voyager electronic ignition for my 1990 4.3 Mercruiser...works great....my problem has easy instructions from the supplier to hook up the shift interrupt. They talk about blue wire...mines white w/green stripe and the black wire. Hooked up like they said with 2amp inline fuse. My fuse keeps blowing. Should I test the shift interrupt switch or what am doing wrong.

Re: shift interrupt

I have never read anybody with an inline fuse for the interrupter, as far as I know interrupter acts as a short to cut the engine while shifting gears, so when the voltage comes back to keep the engine running the discharge would blow the fuse , but I could be wrong, I'm going tru the same issue

Re: shift interrupt

Glastron cutty, I edited my post here because I think I gave you bad info. my thunderbolt 4 ignition uses the connection to ground to cut out the engine during gear shifting. I am pretty sure your new delco does not use ground to cut out engine. So, hopefully AChris or someone that knows can jump in here and get your problem solved.

Re: shift interrupt

My wires are hooked up to a, what looks like a ground block then to the switch...maybe just hook the wires directly to the switch that way its not to ground. I'll try that...Thanks:)

Re: shift interrupt

Here's a couple of drawings I did a while ago for someone else in the same position as you...

First is the system as standard. Second is how it should be modified for a Delco EST system.... Hope this helps.

Re: shift interrupt

Wow Chris just what I'm looking for. That's why the fuse kept blowing probably uh...do I really need the fuse?

Re: shift interrupt

The entire engine system is protected by the main 50A breaker. Personally, there's no fuse in the Thunderbolt system, I don't see why there should be one in the Delco...

Just make double sure that BOTH the wires from the interrupt switch are isolated from ground (as per the drawing), or you'll be replacing more than a fuse.

Yes, I'm in Australia (Perth, on the West coast to be exact), and yes, that's why you only hear from me in the mornings and evenings. (evenings and mornings here... But always remember this... We're ahead of you :D) The unfortunate thing about that is that by the time I wake up and get to look at iBoats, all the 'good' questions have been dealt with, I get the scraps... :D :D :D

Re: shift interrupt

Hey Chris Glaston Cutty once again to the man down under. Finally tried my boat....would not start unless I unhooked my shift interrupt...very frustrating....Don't know how to send a pic on this forum but if I had an e-mail I could show u how I wired this thing.

you need to remove the connector block its probably making ground. or have a bad interruptor switch.

Re: shift interrupt

Not hooked up to terminal block. Isn't the switch like a light switch...doesn't matter which way the wires are hooked up? There's not a flow direction in the switch is there?

Re: shift interrupt

Switch is just on/off. No diode in it.

When you say 'unhook', do you mean unhook and join the wires together, or just unhook and leave off?

From the switch...one wire directly spliced into purple that goes to my coil....t
he other wire on my switch goes directly to my distributor(black)...no terminal block. It acts like its back firing in the carb
