I occasionally have this come up where I have replaced a lower shift cable, test it (on the muffs), then later get reports that the boat is dying in the water once under a load coming in or out of forw/rev. I understand why it's dying on the water under load and not while on the trailer, but what I don't know is how to prevent someone having to bring it back to me because it is not adjusted properly and how to test it properly on the trailer before sending it out. I do not have a test tank.

The only test you can do on land is to operate the switch manually making sure the lever moves freely and the spring is in good condition. A high idle may contribute to difficulty coming out of gear.

The problem is not that it won't come in/out of gear….the issue is that the motor dies when it does. Too low of an idle is what my guess would be, but I'd just like to be sure I have it right.

If you're setting the idle at 700-750 on muffs, that's too low. When you drop them in the water, they lose 50 to 100 revs just because of exhaust back pressure... Are you having more problems with 4 pots then the V8 engines? if so, set them about 100 revs high on muffs...
