hey guys

went word for word buy the manual and with a lot of help from this forum i got my impeller changed out and the drive back on.....started it up (in the driveway) and the alpha 1 gen 2 was throwing out the water good... mission acomplished.....well then i want to check and see if i had forward and reverse and as soon as i started to shift into forward i heard the gears smashing together and relized that the shift interupt didnt happen so i imediately put it back in neutral......this is the first time the boat had been shifted this season and the cables most likely need changing....my question is did i do something wrong putting the drive back on (yes i had it in forward) or do you think it is the cable not engaging the interupt or do the interupt switches go bad very often....last question is did i do any damage to the gears

So about that paypal payment.... :) Just kidding.

Sure you can shift your boat on the muffs. Why wouldn't you? Just make sure your shifting firmly and quickly with the throttle lever and that your idle rpms are not to high when you shift. The gears will make a racket, they do on the water to you just don't hear it. You don't want to shift slow and grind gears, you want to shift fast and have it slam in, to a degree.

Was there something specific that you didn't understand about how the interupt system works?

Re: shift interupt not working after impeller change

maybe my cables are way out of wack....it seams like there is no way to shift without running the tack up to 1500-2000 rpm.... thats why i kinda eased it.... i should be able to shift into gear while staying at an idle 800 rpm correct?.....man i really need to change my cables but im scared i am going to get into something i cant get my self out of...i also got a teleflex ch1700 control to put on but when i got my impeller kit at the boat shop the owner (merc dealer) said it was junk and i needed to buy the merc 4000 model....right now i am running the 3000 model and i hate it and it feels sticky and hard to work....what do you think about teleflex jason

Re: shift interupt not working after impeller change

The Merc Commander 3000 sucks, and there was a recall on them at 1 point. Personally a remote controll is a remote controll, and I see so many of them, some are better than others, but I prefer the factory ones. And if it was my boat I'd have a Merc control.

That being said. RPMS should not increase before it shifts. If it does, that means the throttle cable is moving before the shifter cable, and not after like it should. Me thinks your cables are backwards either in the controll box side or the engine side. That or somebody opened up the controller and monkeyed with it.

Download your manual as well as the controller manuals from the adults only section and see if your cables are backwards, i'm betting you a beer (keg size), they are.
