1993 vip 4.3 mercruiser with alpha1 generation 2, the boat would die if you put it in reverse after i had the interior redone and the interior place had to take off and but back on the shifter, so when i loosened the switch off the boat now goes in reverse and runs fine, is this switch necessary, should i leave it loose or try to readjust the shift cables

Yes, it is necessary......
You will not be able to shift out of gear while in the water without shutting off the engine......
Did the cable get bent or kinked when they did their work?.....

You need to get the shift cable, from the shifter that was removed, back to where it should be.
That switch is necessary if you want to get your drive out of gear when in the water.

HERE is a link to the OEM manual you can download for free. Scroll down to the outline and click on secion 2A. It will tell you how to adjust the cable.
