ok my boat *9 sea hawk with 3.0 4 cyl and alpha one is making noise on the shift I set it up before and never really looked at the interrupt
well now I'm looking
if I run the boat and manually trip the switch it stalls the motor like it should
and when I move the shifter to shift position the interrupt activating leaver doesn't move therefore not activating the switch

what do I need to do it all seems to shift fine not running but makes noise when it is running because no interrupt to allow engagement

You need to adjust the shift cable. Chris has the how to video's in DonS adults only section. If after adjusting according to the video and you still have a problem the you need to replace the lower shift cable. The lower shift cable doesn't last a real long time and is a known issue

I don't understand how the shift cable makes this part work is there a certain amount of resistance in the cable that causes the cable to push the interrupter part

well perfect so not enough resistance on land for the switch to work
I will double check the other set up on the cables and try it on water next time out

The switch is only used when shifting out of gear not into gear. If you are getting chattering going into gear you are just not shifting it fast enough.

just in case you missed it though- the shift interrupt system doesn't engage when shifting from neutral into gear, only to allow it to come out of gear. if you're grinding when shifting into gear- your shift cable is the cause, not the interrupt system

I have adjusted it and haven't been happy with it not going smoothly
these have all been on land adjustments so no load on prop
but it seems if i get forward working rewind doesn't
think I'm going to set it so forward is real good and deal with the rewind

unless someone has better plan till I get shift cable can it be changed with only removing the the out drive and not pull apart gimbal

what does that mean exactly? there will be ratcheting if you try to put it in gear slowly, you need to push the handel firmly/ positively into gear. The shift interrupter only works in the water with a load on the prop COMING OUT OF GEAR

is there any adjustment in the control leaver box
it seams that if i can get the slop out of the cable it should go into gear both forward and reverse I'm not convinced its the lower cable as I can move the linkage with out the control cable and it goes into both forward and rewind fine

No.... there is no adjustment in the shifter. It is all at the engine side.

Where are you at in the "slot" for Reverse? You adjust the barrel for forward, the slot is there to increase travel for reverse.

it just seems that if I can get rid of the slop in the cables it will all work
if i set the lower for the 6" then adjust the control i can get into forward but not reverse by just moving lever but if I push on linkage just enough to take the slack out it all works
yes I get the idea it could be slack from a stretched cable but its so close
this boat is new to me and I know the other owner had all new bellows and top rebuilt I would have thought they would do cable to

im sure if you could get the slop out it would work, but that's the problem. can't cut it, well i wouldn't anyways. how much slop are you talking about? if you have enough to make a loop you could loop it to take out the slack and use a cable crimp(metal piece thats clamped around wires) to hold it. might work. best bet is to replace the cable though- i don't think they cost too much and in reality it's a safety issue, reverse could save your life, or your boat at the very least. would suck if the cable broke from some modification done to it and you end up stuck in gear. you should be able to save all the new bellows according to the link i posted earlier. find a manual and get er done. good luck

Well I had a marine guy look at it he has it adjusted so it works he said he thinks it's the control cable and or box
so now I'm on search for good pics of the box and stuff before tearing mine out to see what I can do the boat is a 89
