Shift issue after impeller fix.

83 50 hp merc.
Changed seals and impeller.
I don't remember what gear it was when I pulled lu.
I can find f n r on stand.
F clicks when I push prop in and hand spin.
N spins free.
R locks to input shift ccw rotation.
Shift cam in n and forward control in n on reinstal.
When installed l u stay neutral no matter what I do with forward control.
Reverse latch no longer works as well.
I've read the 60 second fix here maybe I'm missing something.
I marked female spline on upper and it doesn't appear to move cw or cow from forward controls w l u off.
Any help would be very appreciated.
I'm getting old and 30 times apart and back together in this heat is eating at me.

I replaced seals and impeller.
On the Bench forward neutral reverse seems to work fine.
I don't recall what gear I took it apart in and I've put it back together in neutral, f/r.
The controls up front will not spin the female in upper unit even when lower is off.
The safety reverse latch no longer works as well.
I've read the 60 second fix here and tried that to no avail.
I'm new here and posted this a bit ago and don't see post.
I'm not to good with all this typing so I hope this one makes it.
Any help is appreciated.

Simple Method Of Shift Shaft Setup For Mercury Outboards Verified

This is how I do it in about 60 sec.: Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this should be neutral - check by turning propshaft -- prop should spin...
